Student Comes Before Athlete

The word Student Athlete is used during recruiting all of the time. Do you understand why Student comes before Athlete? It's because you are most importantly a student and as long as you make the grades, you are an athlete after!

I hear this mixed up by recruits all of the time. They are under the impression that they are just going to be able to play a sport without having to do any work in the classroom and they couldn't be more WRONG!! Your academics begins at a young age and you need to do the best you can, every year. During your freshman year of high school they keep track of your GPA. If that GPA gets too low you will not be able to play high school ball and you will definitely struggle getting into a college to play. It does not matter if you are the next Peyton Manning, if you have a low GPA you cannot get into college. So this means that even at 14 years old your freshman year, you are having an impact on your future going to school. Take it seriously. I have had way too many recruits come to me and say "I wish I knew when I was a freshman how important my grades were and how it would affect me after I graduate". It is sad to hear them say this because I am sure they were told but at that young of an age you do not listen. So take all of your high school education seriously and earn the grades that will get you to the next level.

Once you get into college nothing changes. You are still a STUDENT athlete. You have to maintain a certain GPA to be eligible to play and if you go under that mark you will be suspended from the team until it is brought up. College is extremely different that high school though, there is not a teacher over your should telling you to get things done. If you do not turn it in then they move on and you just don't get the grade. In college you have to be way more disciplined than high school and hold yourself accountable for doing your work. Sometimes this is hard for athletes but it is necessary for success. But the good news is there is resources to help you achieve your academic goals and your coaches will help you find those resources.

To finish off, just remember the name "Student Athlete" . Because there is a reason that student comes first in that name! Work hard, get the grades, and then go show out on the field!
