Early Recruiting

When you begin your recruiting it can feel extremely overwhelming. I also know it is hard to look at all of this and know where to start. Today, I will explain to you how to get started and what coaches will be looking for as you start your journey.

Let me start off by saying that recruiting is a marathon, not a sprint. By saying that I want you to understand that you will not get recruited on your first day. A lot of athletes get discouraged at the beginning of the recruiting process because they were not instantly offered. Do not let this discourage you and cause you to give up. Keep posting on social media and building yourself. Because recruiting is kind of like being a sales person, you are there to sell yourself and your abilities to college coaches.

Once your have sold your abilities to them and they have followed or reached out, then you need to build a relationship with them. I say this because we are at the next area athletes get discouraged. Most athletes think they right when a coach contacts them that they are going to get offered and this could not be further from the truth. These coaches are reaching out to build a relationship with you and to see if you will mesh well with their coaching staff and the rest of the team. So do not get discouraged when your conversation with a coach goes on for months, this is a good thing. That means they enjoy talking with you and want to continue to build that relationship.

Also try to build relationships with as many coaches as you can during this time. There is nothing wrong with building a relationship with multiple coaches. To do this you need to be following multiple coaches and programs. You should be following 100's of coaches and programs. When I get on an athletes social media and see that they are only following 20 or 30 people, that tells me two things. They don't want to put in the work for recruiting or they don't understand what the recruiting process takes. So make sure you are looking up/following these schools, coaches, and programs. The more relationships you build the more likely you are to find that home your are looking for.

This is a very small amount of early recruiting. This will help you not get discouraged and gives you a starting point on your journey of recruiting. In our next blog I will dive into what you need to have on your social media and what you need to be posting.
